The state of the environment – 2013
Do you know how to lose credit for work your doing for the OBRC and other bird related things? Start telling people your opinions on issues, because not everyone will agree with you (or very few will) and will therefore disagree with everything else you ever say about anything... But anyways...
This is ma blog! And I’m gonna blog like many bloggers do (maybe not “bird bloggers” but general news bloggers).... Time to rant about issues that have been topical recently! Based entirely on my narrow and generally uninformed point of view...
Subject #1: USFWS about to issue Permits for Taking (killing) of Whooping Cranes/piping plovers
My understanding: the US gov is about to hand out some “incidental take permits” to a wind farm in Texas (or multiple wind farms in Texas)...
My trains of thought:
#1 – What are the odds of a Piping Plover getting hit by a wind turbine? 0.0003%?!
#2 – If there is a decent chance that one of the remaining wild Whooping Cranes gets hit by a turbine, is it worth it? My guess is NO... I understand that few birds get hit by these things (separate debate), but surely there must be a way to ensure that the odds remain astronomically low (based on studies of the birds feeding and daily routines)... Because – (see #3)
#3 – these take permits are generally meant to say that in the EXTREME chance a bird like a PIPL DOES actually get hit, then they will not be charged the same way someone would get charged for going on an intentional shooting rampage of an endangered species... Should this apply to Whooping Cranes though? Probably not, but then again - how informed are we of the situation?!
" Say no to everything "
While keeping your eyes and ears open to other opinions and views, when it comes down to doing the right thing, stick with your own gut feelings. Fight for what "you" think is the best strategy. You are so young but have many years ahead of you to contribute. Keep up the good work and keep watching out of your condo window for that mega rarity bird.

Thanks Linda! :) I was excited to have the day off today to watch the lake from the condo - but it's snowing so hard that I can't see the water!
