The state of the environment – 2013 part 3 of 3

Subject #3 – SAVE THE ORCAS

God this p!$$3& me right off, pardon my language... Kids don’t read this, do they? Ok I’ll stop..  If you don’t know what the story is (orca’s trapped in Hudson Bay ice) then it’s worth a read...

http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2013/01/10/freed_killer_whales_in_hudson_bay_may_not_be_out_of_danger.html

&#&#&$**$*#&$*$...  I can’t express how much this news and subsequent coverage bothered me...
I’ve read that Orcas entering the arctic are DECIMATING Narwhals and Belugas.. They are incredible predators and the marine mammals of the arctic are unprepared to deal with them...  Letting these Orca’s croak probably saves a LOT of lives..

"I've supported the *Let Orcas Die* movement since 1999"

But then there’s everyone, saying we should be sending icebreakers to SAVE them!??!?! Sending ice breakers?! Are you kidding me!? How much money would that cost to save a few whales?! ANIMALS DIE ALL THE TIME.. Who knows how many other whales are trapped in the ice in Hudson Bay... But just because we know about these individuals, we need to send a ship thousands of km’s to “save “them?! How do we know if it will even work!??! Ice breakers BREAK ice... They don’t create open water.. The whales would still have to learn how to push through the floating ice chunks to get air.. Then figure out how to follow the darn ship 1000km back to open water... And how much would this all COST!!??! Here’s a different thought:

n  POLAR BEARS... Guess what? Polar Bears are about to go extinct (ok I’m exaggerating a little)... How many Polar Bears do you think 10 dead Orcas (scattered all along the Hudson Bay coast in Ontario and Manitoba) would feed?!?! Christ, it’s the savior of the Polar Bears... They can’t hunt seals on the ice in the winter anymore (due to lack of ice). SO now they’ll just get fat in the summers eating dead orcas!

Minister of the Environment, here I come...  It’s no wonder environmental issues are not taken seriously when I read comments on articles like “they should just cut holes in the ice every 500 meters until the whales reach open water” – with 100 facebook *thumbs up* on THAT comment... Do people have ANY idea what the situation is like up there?!

THERE’s A LOT OF ICE...
